Georgia Power Company generates, transmits, distributes, purchases, and sells electric service in Georgia. Its electricity comes from coal, nuclear, and natural gas, as well as renewable sources such as solar, hydroelectric, and wind. The company serves about 600 communities, including Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Rome, and Savannah, plus rural areas, and sells wholesale to Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the municipal electric authority of Georgia, the city of Dalton, various electric membership corporations, and non-affiliated utilities. It also markets outdoor lighting services, was founded in 1927, is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and is a subsidiary of The Southern Company.
