A group of 25 states, which are Democratic strongholds, filed a lawsuit against the administration of President Donald Trump in the US Court of International Trade on Monday, challenging the imposition of 10 percent and 12.5 percent tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners. These imports account for 99.4 percent of total US imports. The states are asking the court to suspend the measures, declare them unlawful, and order the government to refund tariffs already paid by the states. New York Attorney General Letitia James stated that the administration is again attempting to raise tariffs unlawfully after losing at the Supreme Court. The White House denied the allegations, with White House spokesman Kush Desai saying the US is using its legal authority to address unreasonable actions that burden trade. The lawsuit also notes that the Office of the US Trade Representative announced the new round of tariffs on July 23, just one day before temporary tariffs under Section 122 were set to expire, allowing Trump's tariffs to continue without a gap.
