IONQ IncIonQ announced a quantum computing breakthrough with Synopsys that accelerates industrial design simulations by up to 14.6%.
IonQ stock jumped 9.5% through 12:30 p.m. ET Thursday after the company announced a new quantum computing breakthrough developed with Synopsys. IonQ said it worked with Synopsys to integrate quantum algorithms into mainstream engineering software, accelerating industrial design work such as complex car and jet engine simulations by up to 14.6%. The company said larger-scale simulations like virtual crash tests and aerodynamic analysis require significant compute resources to solve systems of equations containing hundreds of millions of variables, and that quantum computing can speed up testing by solving many variables simultaneously. IonQ added that quantum methods can also identify which calculations need not be solved at all, further optimizing the workflow. The press release did not mention any specific revenue benefit for IonQ, which remains unprofitable and is expected to stay so for the foreseeable future.
