Situational Awareness, a US emerging fund led by a former AI researcher in his twenties, fell into a management crisis in July and was forced to sell most of its holdings to raise funds. The fund had grown its assets under management more than fivefold in the first half of 2026 alone, reaching approximately 45 billion dollars, but towards the end of the month semiconductor and AI stocks plunged, leading to a series of additional collateral calls from banks and leaving it strapped for cash. It is believed that a major US fund ultimately bought most of the holdings to bail it out. Among financial professionals, the prevailing view is that this is a problem specific to an individual fund that overextended itself through leveraged investment expansion, but many funds take risks to enhance investment efficiency, and there is also growing wariness about the risk of rapid market turmoil.
