Alphabet Inc Class CAlphabet's massive AI capex increase raises sustainability concerns, but strategist argues spending will continue, supporting revenues.

Carson Group chief macro strategist Sonu Varghese discussed the recent chip sell-off and the sustainability of AI-related spending. He noted that Alphabet has significantly increased its capital expenditure plans for AI, from an initial $115 billion to a range of $195 to $205 billion for 2026, with projections of $250 to $260 billion next year, representing about 1.5% of GDP over two years. Varghese said the market is questioning whether such spending is sustainable, but his firm remains in the camp that spending will continue, supporting semiconductor revenues and profits, though some consolidation may occur. He also addressed investor Steve Eisman's reduced AI exposure and sale of Alphabet shares, advocating a barbell strategy that balances momentum with low-volatility stocks.
