The Association of Investment Management Companies, or AIMC, has announced a target to double the number of mutual fund investors to 6 million within five years, up from about 3 million, by expanding its base among younger generations, the elderly, and foreign investors. Association President Poj Harinsut revealed that currently only 2.83 million Thais invest through mutual funds, with 4.2 million securities trading accounts and 3 million saving through provident funds, out of a workforce of 20 million formal and 20 million informal workers. Total investment value across mutual funds, provident funds, and private funds stands at 10.16 trillion baht, compared to a GDP of 18.37 trillion baht. The association also proposes adjusting investment conditions for Long-Term Resident Visa, or LTR Visa, holders from the current requirement of investing at least 500,000 US dollars in real estate or government bonds to allowing investment of 1 million US dollars in the Thai capital market through infrastructure funds, real estate investment trusts, ETF funds, ESG funds, and Thai stocks. It estimates that attracting 20,000 to 30,000 high-net-worth investors per year could bring capital inflows of around 30 billion US dollars, or nearly 1 trillion baht, annually into the Thai capital market.
