Alibaba reported a 75% drop in profit for the April-June quarter as it invested heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Profit fell to 10.5 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) from 43.1 billion yuan ($6.4 billion) a year earlier, while quarterly revenue grew 9% to almost 269 billion yuan (nearly $40 billion). Revenue from AI cloud and compute services rose 45% to 48.4 billion yuan ($7.2 billion), but capital expenditures jumped 75% to 67.7 billion yuan (about $10 billion), weighing on profits. CEO Eddie Wu said AI and cloud revenue growth will accelerate in coming quarters, and the company's U.S.-traded shares fell more than 3% on Thursday.
