Alibaba Group Holding LtdQwen AI models surpassed 3 billion downloads, leading the open-source AI race.
Alibaba's Qwen family of open-weight AI models has recorded more than 3 billion global downloads over the past six months, becoming the world's leading AI model and surpassing U.S. rivals Meta and Alphabet's Google as well as its Chinese peers, according to Bloomberg. In comparison, Google had 418 million downloads while Meta recorded 227 million downloads this year, open-source AI hub Hugging Face said in a report published on Friday. Alibaba said in an emailed statement that Qwen has open-sourced more than 460 models, and its ecosystem has generated over 300,000 derivatives. Unlike closed frontier models such as those from U.S. firms OpenAI and Anthropic, open models including Qwen can be downloaded and customized to generate new AI products, making downloads and derivative models a key measure of success in the Sino-U.S. AI race.
