Alibaba Group Holding Ltd$10.2B discounted equity raise dilutes holders and Bernstein cut its price target to $165 from $180 on the timing/optics of the capital raise

Alibaba Group Holding Limited raised $10.2 billion in an equity offering of 710 million shares at a discount, drawing investor scrutiny over dilution as the company funds its AI push. The raise came even though Alibaba already held more than $30 billion in net cash, signaling the proceeds are meant for AI investment rather than balance-sheet support. On September 7, Bernstein SocGen lowered its price target on Alibaba to $165 from $180 while keeping an Outperform rating, citing concerns about the timing and optics of the capital raise. Bernstein modeled a 3-year payback period on capex around Alibaba's existing Zhenwu 810E chip, but channel feedback on the newer M890 chip, which entered commercial deployment in August, pointed to a shorter 2.5-year payback. Institutional positioning remains mixed: funds holding Alibaba fell to 97 in the second quarter from 102 in the first, Fisher Asset Management trimmed its stake by 1% to 5.1 million shares, while Discerene Group added 4% to reach 2.7 million shares and Citadel Investment Group raised its stake 39% to 2 million shares. As of August 14, roughly 42 million shares were sold short, about 2% of the public float, up just 0.34% from the previous report.
