Alibaba Group Holding LtdWan3.0 launch and $10B placement show AI investment but earnings fell 75% and dilution concerns weigh.

Alibaba Group Holding Limited has introduced Wan3.0, its latest AI video-generation model, one day after announcing a HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) share placement to finance rising AI investment. The model can create videos up to 30 seconds from documents, spreadsheets, slides, and web pages, and has been used in short dramas, film production, advertising, tourism promotion, and music videos since its public beta on August 6. Alibaba's AI Cloud and Compute Services revenue rose 45% year over year to approximately $7.1 billion, with AI-related product revenue reaching about $1.8 billion, growing triple digits for the twelfth consecutive quarter. However, quarterly earnings fell 75% as AI-related capital expenditure surged to nearly $10 billion, up 75% year over year, and the placement dilutes existing shareholders. The company has not disclosed Wan3.0's revenue or paying customers, and faces intense competition in video generation, raising concerns about whether the investment will yield sufficient returns.
