Alibaba Group Holding LtdAlibaba launches new AI model Qwen3.8-27B and releases weights of Qwen3.8 Max, boosting its competitive position.
Alibaba Group shares surged about 2% on Monday morning as the Chinese technology company introduced a new AI model aimed at consumer devices and released the weights of its flagship system, intensifying competition with Meta in open-weight AI. Alibaba's Qwen3.8-27B is designed for laptops and other local hardware, targeting coding, research and agent-based tasks, and the company said the model can deliver performance comparable to a system 10 times its size. The company also made the weights of Qwen3.8 Max available for download, allowing developers to run and modify the model, although Alibaba is not disclosing the underlying training data and methods. The release comes shortly after Meta outlined plans for its own open-weight AI models built to operate on laptops, and Alibaba has been gaining traction in the category, with Hugging Face data showing Qwen-based systems accounting for 151,448 derivatives, about 2.6 times Meta's footprint. The latest launch also highlights the growing focus on on-device AI, where models operate directly on phones or computers rather than relying entirely on remote data centers.
