Alphabet Inc Class CAlphabet begins selling custom TPUs to outside customers, generating new revenue.
Alphabet has started generating revenue from sales of its custom Tensor Processing Units to select outside customers, CEO Sundar Pichai announced during the company's second-quarter earnings call. The TPUs, designed for specific artificial intelligence workloads, are cheaper than Nvidia's GPUs and could reduce customer reliance on Nvidia. Broadcom, which has a long-term chip-design partnership with Alphabet extending through 2031, stands to benefit if TPU sales grow. The new revenue stream is currently a minuscule part of Alphabet's total revenue but may become a meaningful growth driver over time.
