Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is integrating its new artificial intelligence weather model, WeatherNext 3, into several major products, including Search, the Gemini app, Google Maps, Google Maps Platform, and Earth Engine. The model uses live satellite observations to generate hourly forecasts with resolution as fine as 5 kilometers for some variables, a significant improvement over its predecessor, WeatherNext 2. Google says the new model can deliver forecasts up to five times sharper and avoids the roughly six-hour data lag typical of traditional numerical weather models. For forecasts a day or more ahead, precipitation accuracy can improve by as much as 50%. Beyond weather, the move could enhance Google's existing products and attract Cloud customers in energy, agriculture, transportation, and supply chains, potentially deepening enterprise usage of its data and AI infrastructure.
