Amazon.com IncLabor board ruling forces Amazon to bargain with union, setting precedent that could expand unionization.
A US labor board judge ruled that Amazon must collectively bargain with California warehouse workers at a San Francisco delivery center after the Teamsters gained majority support in 2024. Judge Michael Silverstein relied on the Biden-era Cemex precedent, which requires a company to either recognize and bargain with a union that has legitimate majority support or ask the NLRB to run an election, and found that Amazon did neither. Amazon disagreed with the decision, said it plans to appeal, and argued that a court could overrule it. The case may now move to the NLRB in Washington, where Republicans hold a majority and could possibly use the appeal to revisit or reverse Cemex, making this ruling an important labor-policy test for Amazon and potentially for other major employers facing union campaigns.
