Amazon.com IncAWS revenue growth and operating income up 43%, despite negative free cash flow from heavy AI capex.

Amazon is on track to spend more than $220 billion in capital expenditures this year, driven by signed AI infrastructure commitments. AWS revenue reached $42.23 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 37% year over year, with the AI and chips businesses each hitting annual run rates of more than $25 billion. The company's first-half 2026 capex totaled $98.411 billion, including $54.208 billion in the second quarter alone, and Polymarket traders see a 62.5% probability that full-year spending clears $220 billion. Anthropic has committed to up to 5 gigawatts of Trainium chip capacity and OpenAI to roughly 2 gigawatts beginning 2027, with AWS capacity sold out through 2027 and a contracted backlog of $496 billion. Free cash flow turned negative at negative $7.6 billion as capex consumed 138% of first-half operating cash flow, but operating income rose 43.24% to $27.461 billion in the second quarter, and the third-quarter operating income guide of $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion signals continued earnings power.
