Amazon.com IncAmazon's stake in Anthropic could be worth over $210 billion at IPO, a major catalyst for its stock.

Amazon's 21% stake in AI startup Anthropic could be worth more than $210 billion if Anthropic's reported IPO valuation of at least $1 trillion holds. Anthropic, which plans to go public in October, was valued at $965 billion after its latest funding round in May and has seen annualized revenue soar to $47 billion by mid-May. Amazon built its stake with an $8 billion investment in 2024 and a $5 billion investment earlier this year, and has already recorded massive unrealized gains, with its net income surging 245% year over year to $62.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026, largely driven by the Anthropic investment. A successful IPO would not instantly boost Amazon's net income under GAAP since gains have been incrementally recorded, but it could still act as a major catalyst for Amazon's stock, while a flop could cause a slump. Anthropic's expansion also directly supports Amazon Web Services, as Anthropic is required to use AWS as its primary cloud provider and spend billions on Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips.
