Amazon.com IncAWS sales growth and operating income beat expectations, driving strong overall performance.

Amazon's cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services, delivered 37% sales growth in the second quarter, far exceeding Wall Street's 31% forecast and driving the company's strongest overall performance in recent history. AWS generated $16.6 billion in operating income, accounting for roughly 60% of Amazon's total profit despite representing only 21% of revenue. The company plans to spend $220 billion on capital expenditures this year, nearly all of it on data centers to expand computing capacity for AI workloads. Companywide revenue grew 20% year over year, one of the best rates since the COVID-19 era, and the stock surged following the earnings release.
