Summary · why it matters

Apple has opened testing of a revamped Siri AI in its iOS 27 operating system, unveiled on Monday, ahead of the iPhone 18 going on sale this week. Users must register to enable it through the Settings app, and some may have to wait in a queue to join the test, as the feature is still in beta. The company is positioning the iPhone 18 as ideally suited to artificial intelligence use, because it has fast chips and keeps personal data such as calendars and messages on the device itself. John Ternus, Apple's chief executive, said at the iPhone launch event last week, his first since succeeding Tim Cook on September 1, that this is a personal artificial intelligence that is truly personal. Siri AI first appeared in June, after an AI-driven version announced in 2024 was delayed last year. Apple uses small models it developed itself that run on chips in the device, but for more complex questions it uses Private Cloud Compute on Google Cloud infrastructure, with chips from Nvidia and Intel, and it also uses Google's Gemini to help build its own models. Apple said some Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features that use cloud servers will be limited in daily use, and higher limits will be offered for a fee in the future. Siri AI is currently available in English and will support French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish next month, but will not initially be available in the European Union or China for regulatory reasons.

Snap Launches SPECS Intelligence AI, Expands AR Glasses Trials

Snap introduced its SPECS Intelligence AI service alongside expanded real-world trials of its SPECS AR glasses in September 2026. The launch includes enterprise-focused deployments with partners such as Salesforce, Amazon Web Services and NVIDIA targeting industrial, retail and field use cases. Snap is highlighting a privacy-first architecture for SPECS Intelligence AI, limiting data usage for AI training and personalized advertising. The SPECS Intelligence AI rollout and broader AR glasses push are part of a wider shift in how Snap structures its consumer and enterprise ecosystem, extending its technology into real-world use cases across North America, Europe and other regions. The company's AR narrative hinges on whether an expanding AR ecosystem and new services can turn a social app reliant on ads into a broader computing platform with higher-margin revenue.

Intel CEO Warns Memory Prices Up 5x to 7x as Shortage Threatens 2027

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan warned this week that memory prices have jumped 5x to 7x and now account for roughly 75% of the cost of some lower-end phones and laptops, cautioning the shortage could deepen in 2027. Tan told investors the industry faces one of the most severe supply constraints in its history across leading-edge logic, silicon wafers, memory, and subscripts, and said these shortages will persist for the foreseeable future. Intel is pivoting production toward data-center CPUs and now guides 2026 capital expenditure above $20 billion, with 2027 spending set to run significantly higher. Micron Technology echoed the outlook, saying it sees tightness continuing beyond 2027, aligned with SK hynix flagging 2027 as potentially the industry's worst supply year. Micron's $100 billion in take-or-pay remaining performance obligations and $22 billion in customer deposits and letters of credit lock in floor pricing above prior peak margins, while its fiscal third-quarter gross margin hit 84.9% on DRAM pricing gains in the low 60s percentage range and NAND pricing in the mid-80s percentage range.
