Applied Materials IncAI infrastructure buildout driving record revenue and earnings for chip-equipment maker.

Applied Materials has seen its stock soar 260% over the past year, trading near an all-time high, fueled by what management calls a rapid global build-out of AI computing infrastructure. The chip-equipment maker posted record revenue and earnings, with its semiconductor equipment business expected to grow more than 30% this calendar year. However, the stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 54.7, more than double the S&P 500's 24.3 multiple, and a price-to-sales ratio of 16.0 versus the market's 3.3. Management has cautioned that while its own factories can scale, it takes time for the supply chain to respond, and potential trade restrictions related to China, which accounted for 24% of revenue last quarter, remain an external risk.
