The asset value of Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, fell 67% in July amid a sharp sell-off in AI-related stocks. The fund sold the majority of its holdings to Citadel in the final week of July, disposing of most of its listed equity portfolio. In a letter to investors, Aschenbrenner said the fund had come close to permanent capital impairment, while noting that its year-to-date performance remained up 80%. He also disclosed that all leverage had been removed from the portfolio, without revealing the adjusted portfolio composition.
