Samsung Electronics Co LtdSamsung reported record semiconductor revenue on robust AI chip demand and a 1,299.9% net profit surge.

Asian stock markets closed the morning session mostly lower today, amid concerns over the direction of US Federal Reserve interest rates after the policy committee voted non-unanimously, nine to three, to hold short-term rates at 3.50 to 3.75 percent. Three members voted for a quarter-point hike due to inflation exceeding the two percent target for more than five years. Japan's Nikkei index ended the morning up 1.28 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.03 percent. China's Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.15 percent, South Korea's KOSPI fell 0.40 percent, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.77 percent. Analysts at OCBC noted that Fed policy uncertainty, tensions in the Middle East, and concerns over the semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries could increase near-term volatility. However, strong earnings from Samsung Electronics helped ease some worries, as the company reported second-quarter 2026 net profit of 71.62 trillion won, a 1,299.9 percent increase from a year earlier, and its semiconductor business posted record revenue of 127.5 trillion won on robust demand for AI chips.
