Meanwhile, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index ended 0.4 percent higher, having risen as much as 1 percent at one point. The financials index rose 1.4 percent, its biggest gain in more than a month, with all four major banks up more than 1 percent, but the mining index fell 0.5 percent and the energy index dropped as much as 2.2 percent amid falling crude oil prices.
