Asian stock markets opened mixed today amid concerns over the Middle East conflict after the United States launched a fresh round of strikes on targets in Iran. Brent crude for September delivery surged $6.65, or 7.91%, to settle at $90.74 a barrel, while WTI crude for September delivery rose $5.20, or 6.56%, to settle at $84.46 a barrel. Japan's Nikkei opened down 0.29%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng opened up 0.26%, China's Shanghai Composite opened down 0.42%, South Korea's KOSPI rebounded 1.35%, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.47%. Investors also assessed the outcome of the Federal Reserve meeting, where the vote was 9 to 3 to keep the short-term interest rate at 3.50 to 3.75%, with three members supporting a quarter-point hike.
