Alphabet Inc Class CUnion demands a fee on Waymo rides and airport pickup ban, which could increase costs and restrict operations.
The Atlanta Rideshare Drivers Union has called on local and state officials to impose a Robotaxi impact fee on rides that would add roughly 50 cents to $1 to each fare for the drivers, aiming to protect human drivers' earnings from Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo. The union argues that Waymo's expanded rollout in Atlanta since June 2025 has reduced trip requests and increased idle time for drivers on platforms like Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. Union official Liza Ramsey proposed the fee, with proceeds going to a driver transition fund for training and support for workers displaced by automation. The union also wants city officials and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to block robotaxis from airport pickups. Ramsey acknowledged the union lacks consolidated data proving income declines but cited driver anecdotes and rising costs such as fuel and insurance.
