According to a survey released by Teikoku Databank on the 31st, 195 major food manufacturers plan to raise prices on 2,311 food and beverage items in August, an 83.1% increase from the same month last year. Rising costs for materials, raw materials, and logistics due to worsening Middle East tensions pushed the number above 2,000 items for the second consecutive month. The wave of price hikes is expected to peak soon, with September currently projected at 4,531 items, the highest level in about three years, and October also likely to exceed 3,000 items. For the full year 2026, the known total through November stands at 18,347 items, raising the possibility of surpassing 20,000 items for the second straight year. The firm is wary of a resurgence in import cost increases driven by the historically weak yen.
