At a dinner at the Mansion House, Bank of England Governor Bailey voiced opposition to calls for broad deregulation. He argued that a well-designed regulatory framework is essential to support economic growth, and that simply advocating for deregulation is unconstructive and short-sighted. At the same time, he acknowledged that not all of the central bank's rules are perfectly formed, and last week he presented plans to ease some rules on leverage ratio requirements. He also renewed calls for the United States to take a more cooperative approach to address risks arising from new artificial intelligence models.
