Alphabet Inc Class CBerkshire invested $10B in Alphabet, making it a top holding
Berkshire Hathaway shares rose 2.2% in Monday midday trading after the conglomerate reported second-quarter operating earnings per class B share of $6.03, beating the consensus estimate of $5.13, revived its stock buybacks with $4.5 billion in repurchases, and became a net buyer of equities. The manufacturing, service, and retailing segment was a standout, with after-tax earnings rising 24.1% year-over-year to $4.47 billion, driven by strong demand at aerospace supplier Precision Castparts and electronics distributor TTI. Insurance underwriting earnings disappointed, falling 13% to $1.73 billion, as GEICO's combined ratio widened to 91.2% from 83.5% on higher bodily injury claim frequencies and severities. Berkshire also spent nearly $22 billion on equity stakes, including a $10 billion investment in Alphabet, making it one of the company's five largest holdings, while its cash pile declined to $365.5 billion from $397.4 billion at the end of March.
