BioNTech SECEO succession announced; market reaction mixed with slight pre-market rise.

BioNTech has appointed Guido Oelkers as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective February 1, 2027, succeeding co-founder and current CEO Ugur Sahin. Oelkers brings more than three decades of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry experience, having served as CEO of Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AB since 2017 and previously holding CEO roles at BSN Medical Holding GmbH, Gambro AB, and Invida Holdings. The leadership transition also involves Chief Medical Officer Özlem Türeci, who intends to leave her role to lead a new independent company alongside Sahin, while the search for a new CMO is ongoing. BioNTech shares closed at $90.58 on Friday, down 2.44%, and rose 1.67% in pre-market trading to $92.09.
