BioNTech SEPlummeting demand for Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine drives revenue decline and site closures.

BioNTech has held confidential discussions with prospective bidders regarding plans to shutter manufacturing locations in Germany, Handelsblatt reported. The company announced with its first-quarter 2026 results that it would exit its German manufacturing sites in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg, and Tübingen by the end of this year as part of a restructuring to optimize global production capacity. It also plans to exit its unprofitable unit JPT Peptide in Berlin by year-end, with a search for a new peptide supplier already underway. The divestments come as BioNTech grapples with a sharp revenue decline, from 21.6 billion dollars in 2021 to 3.4 billion dollars in 2025, due to plummeting demand for its Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine developed with Pfizer.
