BlackRock IncBlackRock launches first tokenized share classes in Europe using blockchain, a product innovation.

BlackRock has launched its first blockchain-based share classes in Europe, in partnership with Kinexys by JPMorgan on the Ethereum blockchain. The launch covers selected Institutional Cash Series money market funds, which together held $311 billion in assets under management as of June 30. It uses the Kinexys tokenization platform as an interpretation layer between on-chain activity and the traditional fund register. Each digital token represents an underlying fund share, while the official shareholder register continues to be maintained through transfer agent infrastructure. The twelve tokenized share classes span the ICS Euro Government Liquidity, Sterling Government Liquidity, U.S. Treasury, Euro Liquidity, Sterling Liquidity, and U.S. Dollar Liquidity funds. They enable peer-to-peer transfers between approved investor wallets 24/7 via smart contracts, deliver money market fund returns, and offer near-real-time on-chain visibility. The share classes are available in 13 countries: Bermuda, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
