BlackRock IncSurvey shows strong worker interest in retirement income solutions; BlackRock is expanding annuity-style offerings, likely boosting demand for its products.
A BlackRock survey found that 76% of workplace savers believe their generation will have less certainty about retirement income than previous generations, up from 67% in 2021. The survey, conducted with Escalent among 1,312 workplace savers, also revealed strong interest in retirement income solutions, though annuity adoption in 401(k) plans remains limited. Only 5% of employers currently offer a target-date fund with an annuity, according to the Plan Sponsor Council of America, while Morningstar reported assets in such strategies grew to $44 billion as of March 2026, still less than 1% of the over $4.8 trillion in target-date funds. The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed making it easier for employers to add alternative assets and lifetime income strategies to retirement plans, and major firms including BlackRock, JPMorgan Chase, Fidelity Investments, Vanguard, and TIAA are expanding annuity-style offerings.
