British American Tobacco PLCBAT announces 9,000 job cuts and restructuring to save costs amid shift to smoke-free products.
British American Tobacco is cutting 9,000 jobs as part of a plan to save £600 million by the end of 2028. The maker of Lucky Strike and Dunhill will eliminate 5,500 roles by the end of this year and outsource another 3,500 positions, reducing its 47,000-strong workforce by about a fifth. The restructuring includes the closure of a factory in South Africa and the outsourcing of roles in the UK, Costa Rica, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Malaysia, and Singapore to Accenture. The company is also expanding its partnership with ITC Infotech, outsourcing additional roles in Poland and Romania. The move comes as BAT shifts focus to smoke-free products like vapes and nicotine pouches, aiming to generate more than half of its revenue from such products by 2035.
