Shares of Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys fell roughly 9% on Friday after Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model autonomously designed a functional semiconductor chip in 48 hours using only open-source tools, bypassing the proprietary electronic design automation software that underpins both companies' businesses. The 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight Mixture-of-Experts model produced a 4mm² die running at 100MHz on the Nangate 45nm Open Cell Library, completing 13 modules across 3.981mm² and achieving a simulated inference throughput of 8,721 tokens per second without human intervention. The selloff drew comparisons to the January 2025 DeepSeek shock, with Bernstein analyst Robin Zhu noting that K3 represented another instance where China's top AI labs have surprised global investors, while Bank of America analysts said the demonstration raises the capability ceiling for Chinese AI models.
