Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys shares fell sharply on Friday after Chinese AI lab Moonshot released its Kimi K3 model, sparking investor concerns about disruption in the electronic design automation industry. BNP Paribas analyst Andrew DeGasperi called the selloff unwarranted, noting that the 2.8 trillion parameter open-weight model reportedly designed and verified a nano chip in 48 hours using open-source EDA tools. DeGasperi argued that AI is not displacing incumbent chip design software players but rather automating manual workflows, and that leading tech companies continue to pay for Cadence and Synopsys due to the complexity of designing advanced AI chiplets. He highlighted that both firms are developing their own superior AI agents, such as Cadence's ChipStack AI Super Agent, and recommended buying on the weakness.
