Canadian PM Signals Willingness to Reach Trade Deal with US, Stresses Need for Stability and Trust

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on the 3rd that he is ready to conclude a trade agreement that benefits both the United States and Canada, but indicated that any agreement must provide stability and reliability. Speaking to reporters in Thunder Bay, Ontario, he said, "An agreement that is achievable and serves Canada's national interest will also serve the U.S. national interest. When the U.S. side is ready, we are prepared to sit down and finalize an agreement." Regarding comments by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Canada had walked away from a trade deal due to domestic politics, Carney dismissed them, saying, "I don't think unelected U.S. cabinet members are experts on Canadian politics." He also expressed the view that the U.S. stance has recently softened, which could prompt further discussions. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump warned on his social media that it is fine for politicians like Carney to portray him as an "enemy," but in that case, the Canadian economy would collapse, and it would be worse than anything that has happened to Canadian politicians.
