Record backlog driven by energy demand for data centers signals strong future sales.

Caterpillar's order backlog hit record levels before its stock surged 96% between August 2025 and August 2026. In fiscal Q1 2025, management reported an all-time record for organic backlog growth in a quarter, a $5 billion jump that pushed the total to $35 billion, and by the next quarter it climbed to a new record of $37.5 billion. The company attributed the growth to increasing energy demands to support data center growth related to cloud computing and generative AI. Despite trailing-twelve-month revenue being down 4.9% and tariff headwinds clouding the earnings outlook, the backlog signaled future sales were lining up at unprecedented levels.
