A severe chain of landslides at the Gyirong border crossing on the China-Nepal border in the Tibet Autonomous Region on August 26 has resulted in at least 16 deaths and 546 people still missing, including 261 foreigners from 23 countries. The disaster was triggered by the collapse of a high-mountain glacier on the Nepalese side. Chinese authorities have launched a full-scale rescue operation, with 2,141 personnel already deployed and 2.6 kilometers of road surface opened, leaving 1.7 kilometers to reach the border post. The Chinese foreign minister has discussed with his Nepalese counterpart, emphasizing cooperation and assistance. Meanwhile, China has sent five tunnel experts to help workers trapped in a hydropower plant tunnel in Nepal and mobilized advanced technology, including three mobile weather observation stations and over 20 gigabytes of satellite data, to support rescue and monitoring efforts against secondary disasters.
