Chinese artificial intelligence models are gaining traction in the United States as users seek more affordable and open alternatives to American systems. San Francisco-based Mozilla chief technology officer Raffi Krikorian switched to Moonshot's Kimi K3 for daily tasks, calling it snappier than Anthropic's Claude Fable, while cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is among US companies adopting Chinese models to cut costs. Sensor Tower estimates Kimi had over 930,000 downloads in the week after its July release, a 200% increase, with US downloads jumping 387% to around 86,000. Experts say models from startups like Z.ai and Moonshot are nearly as capable as frontier US systems but cost a fraction of the price, with one executive noting he pays cents per million output tokens versus tens of dollars for American models. The trend is fueled by open-source availability and US export controls that temporarily restricted Anthropic's models, creating openings for Chinese competitors.
