Shares of semiconductor equipment makers surged on Tuesday after South Korea announced that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix plan to invest more than $500 billion in a new chip-making hub in the southwestern part of the country. KLA Corporation jumped 9.28% to $304.23, Applied Materials rose 6.02% to $736.46 after hitting a fresh 52-week high of $739.32, Lam Research gained 5.86% to $435.00, and ASML climbed 5.33% to $1,983.50 after reaching an intraday record of $1,990. The two Korean giants each committed about 400 trillion won, roughly $260 billion, to the hub, with an additional 81 trillion won, about $53 billion, earmarked for chip-packaging facilities in the central region. The initiative envisions four new memory chip plants in the southwest, diversifying from the companies’ current production centers in the Seoul area, and is part of a broader government push to strengthen capabilities in semiconductors, AI data centers, and AI-driven robotics. The decade-long investment horizon is expected to generate sustained order flows for equipment suppliers, with ASML’s extreme ultraviolet lithography machines seen as essential for leading-edge production.
