Summary · why it matters

The Commerce Ministry is urging Thai food exporters to quickly adapt as Indonesia prepares to enforce full halal standards on food and beverage products from 17 October 2026, after a two-year grace period. Nantaphong Jiralertpong, Director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, said Indonesia has upgraded and expanded its halal measures under the Halal Product Assurance Law and regulations of the Halal Product Assurance Agency. All food and beverage products sold in Indonesia must be halal-certified. Indonesia is a key export market for Thailand. In 2025, Thai exports to Indonesia were worth 9.34 billion US dollars, or 306.53 billion baht. Of this, agricultural and agro-industrial goods reached 1.42 billion US dollars, or 46.87 billion baht. Processed products with multiple ingredients or additives must obtain halal certification from Indonesia or a foreign halal certification body recognised by BPJPH. Certain exempted agricultural goods must be inherently halal and have empirical evidence ensuring transparency in production processes and supply chains. Indonesia also tends to expand halal measures to cover halal logistics, including transport, storage, and handling in warehouses and containers. Thai operators can use services from Thai halal certification bodies recognised by BPJPH to obtain halal certificates for goods exported to Indonesia.
