LPL Financial Holdings IncLawsuit against a competitor (Commonwealth) over low sweep account rates may signal regulatory risk for the entire industry, including LPL Financial.

A Commonwealth Financial Network client has filed a class action lawsuit alleging the firm paid unreasonably low interest rates on cash sweep accounts while pocketing most of the yield as fees. Plaintiff Edward Weyler claims that during a period when federal benchmark rates surged, other institutions like Vanguard offered rates more than 335 times higher than Commonwealth’s. The suit, filed in Massachusetts federal court, argues Commonwealth breached its disclosure promise to set rates based on prevailing economic conditions and instead prioritized its own revenue. Weyler’s accounts earned as little as 0.01% and 0.15% in May 2026 even as the Fed’s target rate stood at 3.75%. Commonwealth did not respond to a request for comment.
