Currys PLCCurrys warns memory chip shortage will push up electronics prices, impacting its cost base and margins.

Currys, Britain's largest consumer electricals retailer, warned that a global memory chip shortage will inevitably lead to higher prices for smartphones, laptops and other electronics later this year. Chief Executive Alex Baldock said artificial intelligence and data centres are consuming the world's supply of silicon, leaving less for consumer devices and causing availability challenges and cost price inflation. He said it is too early to estimate the scale of the price rises, but Currys has bought forward to secure supply in computing and mobile phones until at least September. The warning came as Currys reported an 18% rise in adjusted pretax profit to £191 million for the year ended May 2, on revenue up 6% to £9.25 billion, and said trading at the start of its new financial year has been very solid.
