Tesla's Cybercab Faces NHTSA Probe Over Missing Steering Wheel and Pedals
Tesla's new Cybercab robotaxi has drawn a federal probe from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after hitting American roads for the first time earlier this month. The two-seat vehicle has no steering column, gas or brake pedals, and no LiDAR or radar sensors, relying only on cameras and AI, and it also lacks standard rear-view and side mirrors. A first fleet of 45 Cybercabs began operating in Austin, Texas, after a September 4 kickoff, and the NHTSA is now investigating whether the model meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards covering controls, displays, braking and acceleration. The agency said it fully supports safe development of automated vehicles but must ensure all laws are followed, and it is examining how much Tesla's self-certification depended on determinations that certain standards are inapplicable to the Cybercab. Tesla has until September 30 to demonstrate under oath how the model adheres to federal standards essential to its legal sale and commercial use in the U.S., and it could face steep fines, enforced quality monitoring or design directives if the vehicle falls short.

Ferrovial-Led Consortium Wins $9.2B I-24 Choice Lanes Project in Tennessee
Ferrovial announced on August 19 that it has been selected to deliver the I-24 Southeast Choice Lanes, a 26-mile project running between Nashville and Murfreesboro, at a price tag of $9.2 billion. The project is the largest single capital investment in Tennessee's history and the state's first public-private partnership, and Ferrovial is not carrying it alone, since its DriveTN consortium also counts Transurban and Tikehau Star Infra as partners. Ferrovial's July 28 results showed adjusted EBITDA up 21.6% on a like-for-like basis to €746 million over the first six months of the year, with U.S. highways doing most of the lifting, and the construction order book reached an all-time high of €18 billion. Net profit for the first half of 2026 came in at €258 million, versus €540 million for the same period of 2025, a comparison made harsh by capital gains from asset rotation in the earlier figure. Ferrovial ended the first half with €1.3 billion in net cash, excluding infrastructure projects, and has finished funding the $1.1 billion in equity it pledged for New Terminal One at JFK, where construction is 92% complete.

Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company owned by Alphabet, announced on the 18th that it will launch a fully electric autonomous ride-hailing service in Singapore by 2028. This marks the company's first entry into Southeast Asia. An initial fleet of fully electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will arrive in Singapore within a few months, and in 2027 trained autonomous driving specialists will carry out manual driving in the initial phase to adapt Waymo's autonomous driving system, Waymo Driver, to local road layouts and monsoon weather patterns, with the launch of public service expected in 2028. The company is working with Singapore's Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to bring the service to the country, and Transport Minister Chee said, "Singapore welcomes Waymo as the latest autonomous vehicle operator." On the 15th, Waymo also announced plans to launch Japan's first fully autonomous commercial taxi service in Tokyo in 2027.
