Deputy Prime Minister for Legal Affairs Pakorn Nilpraphan revealed that he will propose to the Cabinet in August 2026 to cap the total civil service workforce at no more than 3 million and to eliminate retirement posts, especially positions vacated by dismissal. The proposal is currently undergoing public consultation on early retirement measures, with over 8,000 comments received in the first three days. The results will be summarized and submitted to the Cabinet in mid-August. The goal is to reduce the number of civil servants to 2 million under the existing budget, in order to raise salaries and benefits, attract talented individuals, and increase bureaucratic agility. Positions will be phased out gradually. Criteria for early retirement, such as age range and lump-sum payments, are under review by relevant agencies to maximize benefits for participants and the public sector.
