DHL Group's domestic Germany delivery unit has officially opened the expansion of its parcel center in Cologne-Eifeltor, bringing the facility's sorting capacity to nearly 50,000 pieces per hour. The expansion adds space for 250 additional workers, raising total employment at the site to 750, and serves about 1.2 million households in northwest Germany. The new building, whose construction began in 2024 and finished on schedule this summer, is directly connected to the existing parcel center via a bridge and matches the sorting capacity of the previous largest parcel center in North Rhine-Westphalia, in Bochum; nationwide, only DHL's Aschheim center near Munich, at approximately 72,000 parcels per hour, sorts more. DHL's Post & Parcel division is investing more than 1 billion euros per year over several years, equivalent to $1.16 billion, to restructure its network as letter volumes decline and e-commerce shipping grows. Marc Hitschfeld, head of operations for Post & Parcel Germany at DHL Group, said at the opening ceremony that the expansion is a targeted investment in network performance, adding that online retail continues to grow and customers rightly expect fast and reliable delivery.
