The U.S. dollar traded in a narrow range at the upper 163 yen level in Tokyo trading this morning, amid volatility. It drew support from safe-haven buying due to Middle East uncertainty, but gains were capped after Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama signaled market intervention to stem the yen's weakness, stating the government will take decisive action if necessary. As of noon Tokyo time, the dollar moved at 163.76 to 163.78 yen, compared with 163.80 to 163.90 yen in New York and 163.31 to 163.32 yen in Tokyo late yesterday. The euro traded at 1.1381 to 1.1382 dollars and 186.39 to 186.40 yen.
