Dow hits record high for third straight day, closing at 54,349

On the 5th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 263.24 points from the previous day to close at 54,349.12, marking a record high for the third consecutive day. Easing Middle East tensions and solid earnings provided support, extending the winning streak to five sessions. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 221.55 points to 26,363.44. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange was 1.31245 billion shares, down 125.63 million from the previous day. In currency markets, the yen moved little in the upper 157 range against the dollar, trading at 157.71 to 157.81 yen as of 5 p.m., unchanged from the same time the previous day. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was flat at 4.61 percent. In New York crude oil futures, the front-month September West Texas Intermediate contract fell 55 cents to 75.22 dollars a barrel, its third straight decline, while gold futures for December delivery surged 152.60 dollars to 4,305.20 dollars an ounce.
