The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 693 points at a record high of 53,178.41, lifted by strong gains in major technology stocks. Meta Platforms jumped 6%, Amazon rose more than 4% to reach a market value of 3 trillion dollars, and Nvidia added nearly 3%. Alphabet and Microsoft each gained almost 5%. Meanwhile, WTI crude oil tumbled 5.11% to 80.34 dollars a barrel after President Trump signalled talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. That pushed the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note down to around 4.688%. The S&P 500 rose 1.48% to 7,600.50, and the Nasdaq surged 2.13% to close at 25,913.90. Of the 304 S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far, the growth rate stands at 29.3%, with 85.2% beating expectations. European markets also closed higher, with the STOXX 600 up 0.45%, benefiting from the drop in oil prices. AstraZeneca fell 9% on news of merger talks with Bristol Myers Squibb in a deal worth nearly 400 billion dollars.
