Micron Technology IncMemory chip demand surge is the bottleneck for AI, directly benefiting Micron.
Elon Musk stated that memory chip supply has become the primary bottleneck for AI computing capacity. Speaking on a SpaceX conference call, Musk noted that memory production capacity is growing around 20% per year while demand has surged by 200%, creating a severe imbalance. This dynamic has driven triple-digit percentage gains in shares of Micron and Sandisk so far in 2026, though both stocks have recently sold off on AI spending concerns. Micron expects new production capacity by mid-2027 and another facility by 2028, while Sandisk reported 51% quarter-over-quarter growth in its fiscal fourth quarter, with two-thirds of that growth coming from higher prices. Despite the pullback, the stocks trade at relatively cheap forward earnings multiples.
