Embraer is intensifying plans to enter the narrow-body jet market, a move that would directly challenge the four-decade duopoly of Airbus and Boeing. Chief executive of Embraer's commercial aviation business Arjan Meijer said the company is under constant review and facing inbound requests from carriers struggling with delivery delays for the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, where waiting times have stretched to almost a decade. Embraer's flagship E2 regional jet and its C-390 military transport already provide building blocks for a larger airliner, but Meijer cautioned that launching a new aircraft programme would be a bet-the-company decision, citing the fate of Bombardier, whose CSeries narrow-body programme led to its exit from commercial aviation. The Brazilian planemaker, the world's third-largest, previously saw a proposed $4.2 billion acquisition of an 80 percent stake by Boeing collapse in 2020 amid the 737 Max crisis and the pandemic.
